Confirmed RTX 4080 Super GPU means at best you’re getting just 5.3% more Ada for the money-

Another week, another round of RTX 4080 Super rumours and leaks, but this one has some teeth to it. On the PCI ID Repository, an independent database of hardware device info, there’s a new entry listing an RTX 4080 Super with its GPU codename. The first of the Ada Lovelace refreshes looks like it will be using the AD103 and that’s super disappointing.

We first spotted this bit of news at BenchLife.info (which in turn sources further details from Videocardz) but the gist of it all is that someone has got hold of the PCI ID details, probably from a beta driver, about the forthcoming RTX 4080 Super. The info was added to the PCI ID Repository and it clearly shows the updated card will still use the AD103 GPU.

The version used in the current RTX 4080 is almost the full chip, with just four Streaming Multiprocessors (SMs) disabled. That’s just a potential extra 512 shaders and, given the RTX 4080 already has 9,728 of them, an RTX 4080 Super based on the full AD103 die would o…

In case there was any doubt, Google’s privacy policy now explicitly states that it’s going to suck up all your data to train its AI-

To me, artificial intelligence is a lot like magnets: I have no idea how they work. But I do understand, in a very general sense, that AI is not actually intelligent. It’s just data, collected on a massive scale, algorithmically digested, and spit out in conversational tones designed to make us think that the machine is “smart.”

The popular versions of these systems, like ChatGPT, live and die based on the amount of data they can harvest, which essentially means they’re reliant on you. And in case there’s any doubt about what “you” means in this particular context, Google (via Techspot) has updated its privacy policy to explicitly state that pretty much anything you say or do online can be scooped up and used to train its AI models.

Naturally, Google collects data from your online activity, like the stuff you search for, the videos you watch, the things you buy, and the people you talk to, and the location data accessed through your Android mobile device. But “in some ci…

A week after Microsoft closed 4 game studios, Microsoft-owned Activision announces a new game studio-

Just over a week after Microsoft abruptly shuttered four studios—Arkane Austin, Tango Gameworks, Alpha Dog Games, and Roundhouse Games—Microsoft-owned Activision has announced the launch of a new internal studio called Elsewhere Entertainment, “exclusively focused on creating a new narrative-based and genre-defining AAA franchise.”

The new studio is based in Warsaw, Poland, and is made up of “storytelling experts” who have previously worked on games including The Last of Us, Uncharted, The Witcher, Cyberpunk, Destiny, Tom Clancy’s The Division, and Far Cry.

“The new studio has full access to Activision’s resources and tools as it continues to increase production and development,” Activision said. “Elsewhere is opening its search for best-in-class talent from across the industry and around the world to help create a state-of-the-art and next generation gaming experience.”

Elsewhere Entertainment is working on something entirely new—it’s…

Manor Lords dev concedes that archers aren’t strong enough but promises changes- ‘This will surely take a while to get right’-

Developer of Manor Lords Gregg ‘Slavic Magic’ Styczeń has confirmed that there are still a couple of kinks to work out, the biggest of which comes from lacklustre archers who don’t seem to be as effective as you’d think.

Manor Lords is pretty accurate for a medieval city builder and management game. Despite this, Styczeń has previously commented about how “you can’t die on every historical hill” in a Reddit post:

“Whenever I see someone on this subreddit bring up a good gameplay point that might be cool to have, invariably there will be some wise ass in the comments going, ‘but that’s not historical’, Styczeń says. “I think there needs to be some understanding that the game’s foundation is definitely rooted in historical accuracy, but there are absolutely going to be deviations from it for the sake of having a game. And many of you just need to be at peace with that.”

One recent example of this deviation is the archers in Manor Lords. Bef…

Overwatch 2 director opens up about having the worst-reviewed game on Steam- ‘Being review-bombed isn’t a fun experience’-

Overwatch 2 debuted on Steam last week and was immediately hit with so many negative user reviews that it’s now the lowest-scoring game on the platform.

Right now, Blizzard’s first PC release outside the Battle.net launcher has over 140,000 Steam reviews, which Steam summarizes as “Overwhelmingly Negative”. While there are plenty of users criticizing the FPS for understandable reasons, many of the reviewers are simply there to add memes and ASCII art to the pile.

In a blog post reflecting on the release of its newest season. Overwatch 2 game director Aaron Keller said, “although being review-bombed isn’t a fun experience, it’s been great to see lots of new players jump into Overwatch 2 for the first time.”

“Many of the reviews on Steam mention the cancellation of the much larger component of PvE that was announced in 2019 as one of their primary reasons for dissatisfaction with the game,” he continued. “I get that. That announcement was about an ambitious project t…

Minecraft is gonna let you live life as ‘the great white shark, the Arctic wolf, a leopardess, and more’ in a BBC team-up to teach you about life on planet Earth-

The BBC and Minecraft are teaming up again, announcing a new collaboration between Mojang’s staggeringly popular sandbox and the Beeb’s snappily named BBC Studios Natural History Unit. This time, the partnership is based on Planet Earth 3, the latest in David Attenborough’s long, long line of increasingly elegiac nature documentaries that showcase the beauty and complexity of Earth’s ecosystems and the threats they face from, well, us.

The Planet Earth 3 Minecraft World launches today, and promises landscapes and animals based on the Attenborough series that aired last October in the UK. You’ll be able to, “experience the struggles and triumphs of survival while playing as a series of incredible creatures, including the great white shark, the Arctic wolf, a leopardess, and more.”

Putting aside for one moment how sonically pleasing the word “leopardess” is, you’ll be able to find the new mode in the Minecraft Marketplace for both the game’s Bedrock and Education versions.…

A smuggler spotted walking with ‘abnormal posture’ was found to be carrying 306 CPUs-

A man was recently caught at China’s Qingmao port attempting to smuggle CPUs into China. Though not the first attempt at smuggling PC parts into China, this latest attempt was a particularly gutsy try, as the smuggler was apprehended with no less than 306 CPUs strapped to his body.

Smuggling PC parts instead of drugs might make it easer to evade the sniffer dogs, but trying to pass a metal detector test would have been a bit more of a challenge. It appears that wasn’t the reason he was busted, though.

China’s People’s Daily (via Tom’s Hardware) reported that the man was apprehended attempting to cross from Macau to mainland China on June 29. Customs officers observing incoming travelers believed the man “was walking in an abnormal posture”. A subsequent search by officers led to the discovery of 306 CPUs wrapped in plastic film and tape across the man’s waist, legs, and back.

The brand of CPUs was not disclosed, but one of the pictures released by Qingmao …

Russian antivirus giant Kaspersky says do svidaniya to US customers with 6 months of free software- ‘stay safe’-

This week the Russian antivirus company Kaspersky Labs announced it is withdrawing from the United States, following a June decision by the Biden administration to ban the sale of Kaspersky software over alleged links to the Kremlin. This was the culmination of a series of restrictions imposed by the US government: In 2017 the Department of Homeland Security issued a directive banning federal agencies from using Kaspersky software, while in 2018 the same rule was applied to the US military.

Further to its recent statement, Kaspersky has now announced something of a farewell gift to its US customers: six months of free security software and updates (thanks, The Register). The way it chose to announce this was via a letter addressed “To our lovely you”, which also features a green teddy bear holding a heart balloon and a “stay safe” sign, with a single tear in its eye.

Is… is Uncle Sam the baddy? The letter thanks US customers for “choosing and …
